The Adams Rite 7140 Electric Strike provides remote electrical unlocking for compatible doors equipped with an Adams Rite 4500, discontinued 4700 or 4900 Series deadlatch, as well as cylindrical locksets with a 1/2" to 5/8" latchbolt projection.
The 7140 is distinguished by its flat 1-1/4" × 4-7/8" faceplate with square corners. This makes it the appropriate member of the 7100 Series when the existing or specified frame preparation requires square corners instead of the radius-corner faceplate furnished with the standard 7100.
When powered, the keeper releases the latchbolt so the door can open without mechanically retracting the latch. The strike is available in 12-, 16- and 24-volt AC or DC configurations and may be field converted between fail-secure and fail-safe operation during installation. Adams Rite
Important: The 7140 does not offer the optional monitoring switches available with certain other 7100 Series models.

Electrical Configuration Warning
- DC continuous-duty models operate silently.
- AC intermittent-duty models buzz while energized.
- An AC intermittent solenoid must not be continuously energized.
- The correct voltage and AC/DC duty must be selected when ordering.
- Field conversion between fail-secure and fail-safe does not change the voltage or duty rating.
Fail-Safe and Fail-Secure Operation
The 7140 may be field converted between:
-
Fail secure: The strike remains locked when electrical power is removed.
-
Fail safe: The strike unlocks when electrical power is removed.
The correct operating mode must be determined according to the security requirements of the opening and all applicable building, fire and life-safety codes.
Monitoring Is Not Available
The Adams Rite 7140 is not available with the two Form C monitoring switches offered on certain other 7100 Series models.
If the access-control system requires confirmation that the latchbolt is engaged or that the strike jaw is blocked, the 7140 should not be specified. A different compatible electric-strike model and faceplate preparation may be required.
Lip-Extension Options
The standard strike lip is intended for a 1-3/4" thick door closing flush or nearly flush with the jamb face.
Lip extensions are available when the door thickness, center-hung position or jamb profile creates a different door-centerline-to-jamb-edge dimension.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Adams Rite 7140 designed for?
The 7140 provides remote electrical release for compatible Adams Rite deadlatches and cylindrical latchbolts in openings requiring a flat, square-corner faceplate.
What is the difference between the 7140 and 7100?
Both faceplates measure 1-1/4" × 4-7/8". The 7140 has square corners, while the 7100 has radius corners. Monitoring is available on the 7100 but not the 7140.
Does the 7140 have a monitoring option?
No. Adams Rite specifically excludes the 7140 from the optional two-switch monitoring configuration.
Which deadlatches work with the 7140?
The strike is designed for Adams Rite 4500, discontinued 4700 and 4900 Series deadlatches with compatible latchbolt projection.
Can the 7140 be used with a cylindrical lock?
Yes, provided the cylindrical lock has a compatible latchbolt projecting between 1/2" and 5/8".
Is the 7140 compatible with a deadbolt?
The 7140 is designed for compatible deadlatches and cylindrical latchbolts—not for a projected deadbolt. Confirm the installed locking hardware before ordering.
Is the 7140 fail safe or fail secure?
It may be field converted between fail-secure and fail-safe operation during installation. The correct voltage and AC/DC duty must still be selected when ordering.
Are lip extensions available?
Yes. Adams Rite offers lip extensions for the 7140 when the door-centerline-to-jamb-edge dimension exceeds the standard configuration.
What voltages are available?
The 7140 is offered in 12-, 16- and 24-volt AC or DC configurations.
Can the AC model be energized continuously?
No. Adams Rite states that its AC intermittent solenoid must not be used continuously.
Can the 7140 be installed in wood or steel frames?
Adams Rite publishes separate 7140 jamb-preparation details for wood and steel installations. The actual frame preparation and mounting conditions must be verified against the installation instructions before cutting the frame. content.assaabloyusa.com
What comes with the 7140?
The standard package includes the electric strike, square-corner faceplate, mounting screws, mounting clips and adhesive shims.
